Hello Parents from the Little Chipmunks
Last month we studied zoo animals. The children had the opportunity to learn about the zoo and the animals that lived there. May is the fifth month. It is filled with color and beauty. May is named after the Roman goddess of spring and flowers, Maia. The name of the flower is Lily of the Valley and the birthstone Emerald. This month we are learning about gardening. Your child will have the opportunity to become a botanist. This is a very exciting topic because your child will be able to explore and learn about the different steps to plant a seed, and discover how many parts a plant has and when this seed can be planted. We will also learn the names of garden tools and the care gardens need. Some of the learning experiences planned to foster concepts related to the garden include: enjoying a flower shop set up in the dramatic play area, reciting finger plays, playing with mud in the sensory table, observing a bean in a moist paper towel grow as well as a bean planted with soil in a pot, observing and measureing the growth of the bean plant and recording this. The children will help decide which seeds to plant. Along with this unit we will read such things as “Vegetable Garden” by Douglas Florian, “Dandelion” by Ladislav Svatos, “Flower Gardens” by Eve Bunting, “Jack Garden” by Henry Cole, “How a Seed Grows” by Helen J. Jordan, and “One Bean” by Anne Rockwell.

Wishing you a Happy Mother’s Day! Preschool would like to give thanks to our friends and families for their support in our Trike-A Thon event, to help raise funds for The St. Jude Children's Hospital. Preschool raised a total of $1476.00. The students will receive their prizes before the last day of school. I would like to give a special thanks to Shayne’s mom, Ms. Iliana for bringing a book for the children to share in class called, “Nos fuimos todos de Safari (We all went on a Safari)” by Laurie Krebs and Julia Cairns. I would like to thank all of the parents from the Little Chipmunks for helping the children at home to learn more about the theme of the class. Thanks for your support and cooperation.

Reminders
Please Note !
*We are asking parents to please send in spoons with your child’s lunch and snack.
*Franklin Park Zoo Field Trip date will be announced.
*I want to remind you that Friday is Special Sharing Day.
* Each child needs two sets of changing clothes to be left in their cubbies at all time
* Please don't forget to label all of your child's belongings.
* Please take home your child's bedding at the end of each week to be washed.
* On Tuesday and Fridays - please take home your child's homework assignments.
* Please help your child with the homework. It's important that your child do his/her homework. The homework is a reinforcement of areas covered in the class and are to be brought back the following day. Thank you very much for your cooperation.
